Skynet was originally an American computer system called the ‘Global Digital Defense Network’ designed for strategic purposes. It was created by Cyberdyne Systems and gained self-awareness. Once activated, it immediately perceived all humans as a ‘security threat’ and devised a plan to systematically eliminate humanity. The system launched a nuclear strike against the Soviet Union, resulting in approximately three billion casualties. After the apocalypse, Skynet established its own army of machines, including Terminators targeted at individual humans, thus beginning a protracted full-scale war to exterminate the surviving humans, some of whom had already spontaneously formed military resistance groups. At some point in the future, Skynet developed the ability to travel through time. To win the war, both Skynet and the Resistance sought to use this technology, either to prevent or avert the apocalypse.
