In prison, he befriends Red, a long-term inmate skilled at smuggling goods, and over nearly twenty years, they form a deep bond. Using his financial expertise, Andy helps the guards and the warden with taxes and secretly assists in laundering money. When young Tommy, who could prove Andy’s innocence, is killed by the warden, Andy becomes determined to escape. He spends nineteen years using a small rock hammer to dig a tunnel through his cell wall, eventually escaping through the prison’s sewage pipes during a heavy rain. After escaping, he takes all the evidence of the warden’s corruption and exposes the prison’s systemic abuses. Red is successfully paroled and finds the cash Andy left under the oak tree, and the two finally reunite on a beach in Mexico.
